Iyengar: The practice of yoga reduces afflictions and leads to Samadhi
Carrera: They help us minimize the obstacles and obtain Samadhi
Taimni: (Kriya Yoga) is practiced for attenuating Klesas and bringing about Samadhi
Klesas mean afflictions in Sanskrit. Samadahi means absorption or profound meditation.
Iyengar says that kriyayoga (one word in his book) is a precursor to Samadhi and its purpose is to minimize all impediments to meditation and “bring intelligence to a full, vibrant life”.
Carerra says that the goal of yoga is to realize something that is already present in all of us. It removes those obstacles that obstruct Samadhi.
Taimni mentions that that Kriya Yoga leads to the practice of Tapas, Svadhyaya, and Isvara-pranidhana (these are the eight limbs of yoga broken down into three sections. Tapas is Yama, Niyama, Asana, and Pranayama; Svadhyaya is Pratyahara (sense withdrawal) and Dharana (concentration); Isvara-pranidhana is Dhyana and Samadhi).
